Part 1: After the awards ceremony, Ram CEO Fred Diaz talked a bit about what the 2010 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Award means for the Ram brand, especially barely a month after becoming its own brand. “It’s incredible for the brand, and more importantly for the corporation, because it signals to the world that we are serious, and we are capable,” Diaz said. “We have the courage, the teamwork, and the passion to build a world-class truck on a world-class stage.”

“I think having great third-party recognition like Motor Trend and winning Truck of the Year just validates all the hard work and dedication that the team has put in to making this truck the best truck that we can,” says Joe Veltri, VP Product Planning, in this quick video. “Getting that third-party recognition is second to none.”

Motor Trend Says Ram HD is “Cheaper,” “Gets Great Gas Mileage,” and “Performs Really, Really Well”

Posted on December 10th, 2009 by Ram Zone

In part 3 of our interview, Motor Trend Senior Editor Edward Loh stressed what he considered two of the most important features of the 2010 Ram HD: It’s an even better value than before, and has added safety and efficiency. “We heard that the truck might even be cheaper…than the previous generation, even with the Cummins engine. That’s a very strong value statement,” Loh says. “In terms of efficiency, on the diesel we were really impressed with Ram’s approach, which differs from the competition, in that it’s a non-urea-based system. This truck preforms really really well, gets great gas mileage, and you don’t have to worry about filling up a urea tank at the end of the day.”

Loh praises Ram HD’s “Huge Improvements” in Exterior Design, Comfort, and Engineering

Posted on December 10th, 2009 by Ram Zone

In part two of our interview, Motor Trend Senior Editor Edward Loh talks about the Ram HD’s “huge improvements” in looks (both exterior and interior design), comfort, and engineering. Getting into specifics, he praises the Heavy Duty’s towing capacity, its impressive sound deadening, and the powerful Cummins diesel engine: “We were very impressed with just how easy it was to tow huge loads. I’ve never towed anything approaching the 28-foot Chaparral boat we had and we took it up a steep grade about five, six miles. It was like driving any big truck — no big deal, the truck didn’t even feel it.”

“I think it’s critical that we acknowledge the true heroes behind this beautiful truck,” Ram CEO Fred Diaz continued in his speech accepting the 2010 Motor Trend Truck of the Year award on behalf of the Ram team. “The true heroes are the folks in product planning, the folks in design, the folks in engineering, the folks in manufacturing. All I have to do now is take this beautiful creation that you see behind me and sell it. And it’s with great pride that we also share this award with our dealers — you are going to be huge benefactors from this truck of the Year award for our Heavy Duty.” Thanking the entire team, Diaz went on to further emphasize how important this award was to show the world that “as a corporation we have what it takes to build world class vehicles.”

After he received the award, Ram CEO Fred Diaz said a few words about its significance: “This is, in my opinion, the first leaf that we have turned over, the key milestone to show the world that our corporation has the ability, the capability, the courage the passion, and most importantly — if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times — the teamwork to build a world-class truck on a world-class stage. Truly something for all of us to be proud of.”

Edward Loh Explains the Real-World Testing of the Ram HD

Stage 2 of testing for the Motor Trend team was so-called “real-world testing”: taking the trucks on city streets and highways — and, in the case of the Ram Heavy Duty, towing a 28-foot, 11,000-pound powerboat. “Very exciting for the people who don’t tow very often,” Loh admits in this video.
